Maria Chapdelaine tells the story of a young woman having to choose between three suitors promising each a different life. François Paradis, a coureur des bois, a free and wild lumberjack, promises Maria to come back in the spring to marry her while Lorenzo Surprenant offers her an easy life in a city in the United States and Eutrope Gagnon, a valiant and modest farmer neighbor, has took a lot of colonization, next to that of Chapdelaine. The promises of Paradise can not be realized and will question Maria about her choices. Faced with events that jostle her, Maria must then take her destiny into her own hands and decide what her future will be.
