Maria Chapdelaine

We are pleased to announce that Sébastien Pilote’s fourth feature film has been funded by SODEC and TELEFILM CANADA!

This new adaptation of Louis Hémon’s novel to universal resonances is carried by a non-complacent look coupled with a poetic breath out of the ordinary on the Quebec peasantry of the early 20th century.

Maria Chapdelaine tells the story of a young woman having to choose between three suitors promising each a different life. François Paradis, a coureur des bois, a free and wild lumberjack, promises Maria to come back in the spring to marry her while Lorenzo Surprenant offers her an easy life in a city in the United States and Eutrope Gagnon, a valiant and modest farmer neighbor, has took a lot of colonization, next to that of Chapdelaine. The promises of Paradise can not be realized and will question Maria about her choices. Faced with events that jostle her, Maria must then take his destiny into his own hands and decide what his future will be.
